Vocabulary of the Greek NT

For . in its more primary NT sense ";hold firmly to"; Matthew 6:24, Luke 16:13 (but see s.v. ἀνέχω), 1 Thessalonians 5:14, Titus 1:9, cf. such passages from the Κοινή as P Par 14.22 (ii/B.C.) οὐθενὸς δικαίου ἀντεχόμενοι (so BGU IV. 1187.20, in Augustus’ reign, and P Tor 3.24 (ii/B.C.), and 1ii. 14 (B.C.116)), P Tebt I. 40.9 (B.C. 117) (= Selections, p. 28) τοὺς ἐκ τῆς κώμης ὁμοθυμαδὸν ἀντέχεσθαι τῆς σῆς σκέπης, ";that the inhabitants of the village are with one accord holding fast to your protection,"; and P Amh II. 133.11 ff. (early ii/A.D.) καὶ μετὰ πολλῶν κοπῶν ἀνηκάσαμεν ( = ἠναγκ -—see under ἀναγκάζω) αὐτῶν ἀντασχέσθαι (l. ἀντισχ -) τῆς τούτων ἐν ̣ε ̣ργίας ἐπὶ τῷ προτέρῳ ἐκφορίον, ";and with great difficulty I made them set to work at the former rent"; (Edd.). The verb is very common in petitions, as implying that, notwithstanding the course taken, other claims are not lost sight of : e.g. P Oxy II. 281.30 (A.D. 20–50), ib. 282.20 (A.D. 30–5) τῶν μὲν γὰρ ἄλλων τῶν ὄντων μο [ι ] πρ [ὸς ] αὐτὴν ἀνθόξομα [ι ] (l. ἀντέχ -) κα [ὶ ἀ ]νθε ̣ξομαι, ";this petition is without prejudice to the other claims which I have or may have against her"; (Edd.), and ib. IX. 1203.30 (late i/A.D.) τῶν γὰρ ὑπόντων ήμεῖν δικαίων πάντων ἀντεχόμεθα καὶ ἀνθεξόμεθα, ";for we maintain and shall maintain all our subsisting rights)"; (Ed.). The same combination of tenses is found in P Strass I. 74.18 (A.D. 126) τῶν μὲν π ̣ρ ̣ὸ ἄλλων τῶν κα ̣τ᾽ ἐμαυτὸν δικα [ ]ων ἀντέχω ̣μαι καὶ ἀνθέξ [ο ]μαι ἐν οὐδενεὶ ε ̣̓λ ̣λατού [μενος ], and in P Flor I. 86.28 (i/A.D.) : see also ib. 51.22 (A.D. 138–61). In P Tebt I. 41.24 ff. (c. B.C. 119) αὐτ [οί ] τε ἀπαρενόχλητοι ὄντες δυν [ ]μεθα ἀντέχεσθαι τῆς εἰσαγωγῆς καὶ οὐθὲν τῶι βασιλεῖ διαπέσηι, the editors render ";that we being undisturbed may be enabled to attend to the collection of the revenues and the interests of the king may suffer no harm."; Similarly BGU IV. 1116.16 (B.C. 13) . τῆς μισθώ (σεως). P Tebt II. 309.21 (A.D. 116–7) ἀντεχό [μενοι καὶ ἑτέροι ]ς ̣ μεταμισθοῦντες is rendered ";resuming the land and leasing it to others."; It will be noticed that the instances (which might be added to) are all c. gen. rei : gen. pers., as in the Gospels, does not occur among them.
