ἀνοχή, ἀνοχῆς, ἡ (compare ἀνέχομαι τίνος, under the word ἀνέχω, p. 45), toleration, forbearance; in this sense only in Romans 2:4; Romans 3:26 (25). (In Greek writings a holding back, delaying, from ἀνέχω to hold back, hinder.) (Cf. Trench, § liii.)

1. in cl., a holding back, delaying (MM, VGT, s.v.).
2. forbearance, delay of punishment: Romans 2:4; Romans 3:26.†
SYN.: μακροθυμία G3115, ὑπομονή G5281. ἀ ., forbearance, is the result and expression of μ ., which involves the idea of tolerance, long-suffering, as God with sinners. ὑ . expresses patience with respect to things, as μ . with persons; it is active as well as passive, denotes not merely endurance but perseverance (v. Tr., Syn., § liii; Lft., Notes, 259, 273; DB, ii, 47).
