σητόβρωτος, σητόβρωτον (from σής a moth, and βρωτός from βιβρώσκω), moth-eaten: ἱμάτιον, James 5:2 (ἱμάτια, Job 13:28; of idol-images, Sibylline oracles in Theophilus ad Autol. 2, 36).

always plur. in NT (but see Philippians 2:1), the viscera (Acts 1:18), and hence metaph. the ";heart,"; the ";affections,"; ";compassion,"; ";pity."; For this, its more distinctively ";He-braic"; usage (see s.v. σπλαγχνίζομαι), cf. BGU IV. 1139.17 (B.C. 5) ὑπὲρ σπλάγχνου, ";for pity’s sake,"; and for its literal application to a part of the body, cf. the astrological P Ryl II. 63.6 (iii/A.D.), where the σπλάγχνα are dedicated to Jupiter—Διὸς [σπλ ]α ̣ν ̣χν ̣α ̣. See also from the inscrr. Kaibel 691.2 (ii/i B.C.) ζωὴ δὲ πλείων μητρὸς ἐν σπλάγχνοις ἐμή, and ib. 1034.5 τί [ν ]᾽ ὑπὸ σπλάνχν [οις φροντίδα κεύθεις; Exx. of the word from various sources are collected in the notes ad Herodas I. 57 and III. 42 (ed. Headlam). For the corr. adj. see P Osl I. 1.149 (iv/A.D.) ἔρωτι σπλαγχνικῷ. The editor compares the use of εὔσπλαγχνος apparently in the sense of ";benevolent"; in P Leid Vix. 3 (iii/iv A.D.) (= II. p. 31) : see Ephesians 4:32, 1 Peter 3:8.
