trumpeter, Th. 6.69, X. An. 4.3.29, Ascl. Tact. 2.9, 6.3, etc.; this spelling has the best M S. authority and occurs in Phld. Rh. 2.299 S., but has not been found in Att. Inscrr.; σαλπικτής, SIG 153.68 (Delos, iv B.C. ), IG 3.1288, POxy. 519.16 (ii A.D.), etc.; Boeot. σαλπικτάς IG 7.1773 (Thespiae, ii A.D. ), σαλπιγκτάς ib.3195 (Orchom., i B.C. ); later σαλπιστής, ib.9(2).525.4 (Thessaly, ii B.C. ), 3.1285 (Attica, i A.D. ), 7.3196 (Orchom. Rutherford, New Phryn., p. 279); from σαλπίζω (which see)), σαλπιστου, ὁ, a trumpeter: Revelation 18:22.
