ῥάκος [ ᾰ], εος, τό, ragged, tattered garment, δὸς ῥ. ἀμφιβαλέσθαι Od. 6.178, cf. 13.434, 14.342, 349 (never in Il. ); ἀνθ' ἱματίου μὲν ἔχειν ῥ . Ar. Pl. 540; ῥ. φορεῖ Antiph. 204.6, PPetr. 3p.115 (iii B.C.), cf. Philem. 146: freq. in pl. ῥάκεα, Att. ῥάκη, rags, tatters, Od. 14.512, 18.67, 74, 19.507,al., Hdt. 3.129, S. ";extinguish,"; ";put out,"; of fire etc. : cf. P Leid Wvii. 34 (ii/iii A.D.) (= II. p. 105) πῦρ σεβέσαι (l. σβέσαι), and .35 σεβέσθητι (l. σβέσθητι). For the metaph. use in 1 Thessalonians 5:19 cf. Kaibel 204.4 (i/B.C.) ἀμφοτέροις ἡμῖν ἔσβεσας ἠέλιον, and for the meaning ";wash out,"; ";erase,"; cf. the late P Mon I. 1.43 ἐσβέσθαι πᾶν σπέρμα δίκης, and ib. 14.87 (both vi/A.D.). MGr σβήνω, ";extinguish,"; and intrans. ";am extinguished."; See also s.v. ζβέννυμι.
