Cyr. 1.6.19 (pl.); τῆς ἀσφαλείας ἔχειν π . D. 18.281; π. μεγάλην ἔχειν ὡς εὖ ἐροῦντος ἐμοῦ Pl. Smp. 194a; τὰς τῶν ἔργων προσδοκίας ἀπαιτεῖν τινα, i.e. the fulfilment of the expectations raised, Aeschin. 2.178 .

2. abs., τῶν ὑποκειμένων π. καὶ τῶν ἐλπίδων D. 19.24; αἱ ἔσχαται π . D.S. 20.78 .

3. folld. by a conjunction, προσδοκία οὐδεμία (sc. ἦν ) μὴ ἐπιπλεύσειαν Th. 2.93; π. οὔσης μή τι νεωτερίσωσιν Id. 5.14; προσδοκίαν παρέχειν ὡς . . Id. 7.12; π. ἐμποιεῖν ὡς . . Isoc. 8.6 .

4. with Preps., πρὸς προσδοκίαν according to expectation, Th. 6.63; κατὰ τὴν π . Pl. Sph. 264b; opp. παρὰ προσδοκίαν, which is used of a kind of joke freq. in Com., e.g. ἔχειν ὑπὸ ποσσὶ — χίμεθλα (where πέδιλα was expected ), Demetr. Eloc. 152, Hermog. Meth. 34, Tib. Fig. 16: generally, τὸ παρὰ π. ἐξαπίναιον Phld. Herc. 1251.19 .

προσδοκία, προσδοκίας, (προσδοκάω), from Thucydides and Xenophon down, expectation (whether of good or of evil): joined to φόβος (Plutarch, Ant. 75: Demetr. 15) with a genitive of the object added (Winer's Grammar, § 50, 7 b.), Luke 21:26; τοῦ λαοῦ (genitive of subject), the expectation of the people respecting Peter's execution, Acts 12:11.

Klostermann HZNT ad l., and for the compound ἐπιπτύω see P Leid Wxviii. 36 (ii/iii A.D.) (=II. p. 145) ἰς τὴν γῆν ἐπιπτύων, ";in terram spuens."; Cf. also Artem. P. 35.8 μὴ ἐμεῖν δοκεῖν ἀλλὰ πτύειν (αἷμα), and the colloquial πρὶν πτύσαι, ";before you can spit,"; in Menander Περικ. 202.
