Winer's Grammar, § 54, 6), John 4:5; with the article, ὁ πλησίον namely, ὤν (cf. Buttmann, § 125, 10; Winers Grammar, 24) (the Sept. very often for רֵעַ ; sometimes for עָמִית), properly, Latinproximus (so Vulg. in the N. T.), a neighbor; i. e.
a. friend: Matthew 5:43.
b. any other person, and where two are concerned the other (thy fellow-man, thy neighbor) i. e., according to the O. ";meek,"; ";gentle."; In all its NT occurrences πραΰς takes the place of the older form πρᾶος (cf. Blass-Debrunner § 26), but for the latter we may cite a sepulchral inscr. from Pergamon, Cagnat IV. 504.9, where a certain Aelius Isidotus is described as ὁ πρᾷος ἰδίαι, ";meek in private life."; Cf. also Menander Fragm. 749, p. 211 [in Kock]—
ὡς ἡδὺ πρᾷος καὶ νεάζων τῷ τρόπῳ | πατήρ,
";how delightful is a father who is mild and young in heart";
The adv. πραέως occurs in P Par 63viii. 6 (B.C.164) εὐδιαλύ [τ ]ως καὶ πραέως διατίθεσθαι.
