1. unworthy, not deemed or held worthy; ἀνάξιον σοῦ too good for thee, S. Ph. 1009: also c. inf., ἀ. γὰρ πᾶσίν ἐστε δυστυχεῖν undeserving in the eyes of all to suffer, S. OC 1446; νικᾶν Pl. Prt. 356a.

2. abs., worthless, despicable, Hdt. 7.9, S. Ph. 439, etc.; ἁπερεί τις ἔποικος ἀναξία Id. El. 189 (lyr.). Adv. -ίως Id. Aj. 1392, etc.

3. undeserving of evil, Id. Ant. 694, E. Heracl. 526, Th. 3.59.

II of things,

1. undeserved, ἀνάξια σφέων αὐτῶν πεπονθότες Hdt. 1.73, cf. 114, Lys. 21.25, Pl. Cri. 53e: also abs., ἀνάξια παθεῖν E. IA 852, al., Pl. Tht. 184a. Adv. -ίως, ἐφθάρησαν ἀ. ἑωυτῶν Hdt. 7.10. έ.

P Strass I. 5.8 (A.D. 262), ἀνάξια [τ ]η ̣̑ς ὑπὸ σοῦ πᾶσιν ήμῖν πρυτανευομένης εἰρή [ν ]ης ὁ πρεσβύτης παθών. Cf. also Aristeas 217 ἠρώτα δέ, πῶς ἂν μηδὲν ἀνάξιον ἑαυτῶν πράσσοιμεν. The word survives in MGr = ";incapable.";
