ὀκνηρός, ὀκνηρά, ὀκνηρόν (ὀκνέω), sluggish, slothful, backward: Matthew 25:26; with a dative of respect (cf. Winers Grammar, § 31, 6 a.; Buttmann, § 133, 21), Romans 12:11; οὐκ ὀκνηρόν μοι ἐστι, followed by an infinitive, is not irksome to me, I am not reluctant, Philippians 3:1 (cf. Lightfoot at the passage). (Pindar, Sophocles, Thucydides, Demosthenes, Theocritus, etc.; the Sept. for עָצֵל.)

(= I. p. 75) ὄρυξον ἐπὶ δ ̄ δακτύλους, and P Oxy I. 121.3 (iii/A.D.) αὐτὸς ὁ Φανείας ἀνανκασέτω (l. ἀναγκασάτω) αὐτὰς ὀρυγῆνε (l. ὀρυγῆναι, the late 2nd aor. pass.), ";let Phanias himself have them (acanthus trees) dug round."; This last document shows also the compd. περιορύσσω —.6 ἤδη ἐν τῇ σήμερον περειορυγήτωσαν, ";let them be dug round to-day."; From the inscrr. we may cite OGIS 483.62 (ii/A.D.) ἐάν τινες ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς χοῦν ὀρύσσωσιν. . . κωλυέτωσαν αὐτοὺς οἱ ἀμφοδάρχαι.
