Thayer's Expanded Definition

Νικολαΐτης, Νικολαιτου, , a follower of Nicolaus, a Nicolaitan: plural, Revelation 2:6, 15 — a name which, it can scarcely be doubted, refers symbolically to the same persons who in Revelation 2:14 are charged with holding τήν διδαχήν Βαλαάμ, i. e. after the example of Balaam, casting a stumblingblock before the church of God (Numbers 24:1-3) by upholding the liberty of eating things sacrificed unto idols as well as of committing fornication; for the Greek name Νικόλαος coincides with the Hebrew בִּלְעָם according to the interpretation of the latter which regards it as signifying destruction of the people. See in Βαλαάμ; (cf. BB. DD., under the words Nicolaitans, Nicolas; also commentaries on Revelation, at the passages cited).

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

It is hardly necessary to illustrate this common word, but we may note οἶνος καινός in Ostr 1142 (beginning of iii/ A.D.) as the antithesis to οἶνος παλαιός in ib. 1129, not νέος as in Luke 5:39. See also P Lond 111.181 cited s.v. ὁδοιπορέω. For the dim. οἰνάριον cf. P Eleph 13.5 (B.C. 223–2) (= Witkowski.2, p. 43) περὶ δὲ τοῦ οἰναρίου Πραξιάδης οὔπω εἰσελήλυθεν ἐξ ἀγροῦ, P Oxy XIV. 1672.5 (A.D. 37–41) πολλὰ λέα οἰνάρια, ";a quantity of quite thin wine,"; and P Grenf II. 77.36 (iii/iv A.D.) (= Selections, p. 122), where provision is made that the man who is conveying a dead body for burial shall be entertained—ἐν ψωμίοις καὶ [οἰ ]ναρίῳ καὶ ἐλαίῳ, ";with delicacies and thin wine and olive-oil."; Οἰνηγία, ";conveyance of wine,"; is found in P Oxy XIV. 1651.3 (iii/A.D.), and the corresponding adj. οἰνηγός (not in LS) in PSI VI. 568.2 (B.C. 253–2) : cf. οἰνικός in ib. 715.11 (A.D. 92), with the editor’s note.
