2. join one metal or other substance to another, κ. χρυσὸν ἔν τε λευκὸν ἐλέφαντα, i.e. make [a crown] inlaid with gold and ivory, Pi. N. 7.78: Pass., κολλώμενα glued together, opp. γομφούμενα, Ar. Eq. 463; ὁ κολλώμενος σίδηρος welded iron, Plu. 2.619a; στραγγαλὶς χρυσᾶ κεκολλημένη POxy. 1449.23 (iii A.D.).

II generally, join fast together, unite, ἄλφιτον ὕδατι Emp. 34; χαλκὸν ἐπ' ἀνέρι κολλᾶν, of one applying a cupping-glass, Cleobulina 1, cf. Gal. Thras. 23; close up wounds, Id. 11.440: Pass., κολλέεσθαι, of poison entering the system, Hp. 19 (Hermes 53.66); κολλᾷ καὶ συνδεῖ πάντα ἤθη [ὁ πόθος ] Pl. Lg. 776a: Pass., cleave to, κεκόλληται γένος πρὸς ἄτᾳ is indissolubly bound to.. (Blomf. for προσάψαι), A. Vocabulary of the Greek NT

P Fay 112.8 (A.D. 99) καὶ μὴ τῦς (l. τοῖς) κε ̣ι ̣[.]α ̣σι ̣ ἀριθμὸν ταυρικον (l. ῶν) κόλλα, ";and do not unite a number of bulls . . ."; The lacuna prevents our defining κολλάω exactly, and the same difficulty recurs in connexion with its four-fold occurrence in a return of temple property, P Oxy XII. 1449.15, .20, .23, .24 (A.D. 213–17). The verb is also found in its literal sense in P Lond 46.457 (iv/A.D.) (= I. p. 80) οὔτ (ε) κολλήσας τὸν λίθον τῷ ἀριστερῷ σου ὠτίῳ : cf. Michel 594.102 (B.C. 279), a payment to a certain Aristarchus who had ";stuck on";—κολλήσαντι —the handle of a cup. The figurative use in the NT is clearly traceable to the influence of the LXX, where the verb is nearly always = דָּבַק. For the frequency of the verb and its derivatives in medical language see Hobart p. 128, where it is pointed out that Luke uses κολλᾶσθαι seven times as against four Other occurrences in the rest of the NT. MGr κολλῶ, ";glue,"; ";fasten to"; ";adhere.";

For κόλλημα as the technical term for a ";sheet"; formed of two layers of papyrus fastened or glued together, see P Leid Wvi. 41 (ii/iii A.D.) ἰς ἱερατικὸν κόλλημα γράψας τὸ (ὄνομα), for κόλλησις, ";soldering,"; see P Oxy VI. 915.1 (A.D. 572) εἰς κόλλησιν τῶν σωλήνων (";pipes";) τοῦ λουτρ (οῦ), and for κολλητής, see Preisigke 805 (iii/A.D.).
