2. metaph., waste, devour, ἐκείρετε πολλὰ καὶ ἐσθλὰ κτήματ' ἐμά Od. 2.312; ἔκειρον κτήματ' ἐνὶ μεγάρῳ 22.369, etc.: abs., κείρετε (sc. βίοτον) 1.378.
κείρω; (1 aorist ἐκειρα (Acts 8:32 T WH marginal reading)); 1 aorist middle ἐκειραμην; from Homer down; to shear: a sheep, Acts 8:32 ((cf. above) from Isaiah 53:7). Middle to get or let be shorn (Winers Grammar, § 38, 2 b.; Buttmann, § 135, 4): τήν κεφαλήν, Acts 18:18; absolutely, of shearing or cutting short the hair of the head, 1 Corinthians 11:6 (cf. κείρω is used of shearing sheep in PSI IV. 368.45 (B.C. 250–49) ἐκάρη πρόβατα ρ ̄ι ̄ε ̄, cf. .61 ἔκειρε ζ ̄. For the derived meaning ";ravage"; (cf. Lat. tondeo and our ";fleece";) see OGIS 765.10 (iii/B.C.) κείρο [ντ ]ες τ [ὰ ] τεμένη, and the corresponding use of the subst. = ";plur der,"; ";theft,"; in P Lond 403.12 (A.D. 346) (=11. p. 276) ἣ [ν τ ]ῶν προβάτων κο ̣υ ̣ρὰν καὶ ἀπελασίαν. A new literary citation is supplied by Herondas iii. 40 τὴν μάμμην. . κείρει, ";he fleeces his grandmother.";
