HA 564b19, PA 644a21, D.S. 5.3, Str. 8.3.19, etc.; -ῦς SIG 997.1 (Smyrna, perh. i B.C.); -ύας BGU 1123.9 (Aug.), etc.: dual ἰχθῦ Antiph. 194.15:

I fish, ὠμηστής Il. 24.82, cf. 21.122, al., cf. Hes. Op. 277, Hdt. 2.93, S. Aj. 1297,etc.: prov., ἀφωνότερος τῶν ἰχθύων Luc. Gall. 1, cf. S.E. M. 2.18: metaph., of a stupid fellow, Plu. 2.975b.

II in pl., οἱ ἰχθύες the fish-market at Athens, παρὰ τοὺς ἰχθῦς Ar. Ra. 1068; ἐν τοῖς ἰχθύσι Id. V. 789, Antiph. 125.1.

P Petr III. 107(e).6, .9 (iii/B.C.) ἰχθύος, BGU IV. 1123.9 (time of Augustus) ἢ ἰχθύας ἢ ἀγρίας, P Fay 113.13 (A.D. 100) τῇ πόλι πέμσις εἰκθύας (l. ἰχθύας) (δραχμῶν) ιβ, P Hamb I. 6.11 (A.D. 128) μηδὲν ἀπὸ θή [ρ ]ας ἰχθύας π ̣εριγεγονέναι μέχρι ν ̣ῦν, OG1S 484.26 (ii/A.D.) δι᾽ ὧν ἐπηρέαζον μάλιστα τοὺς τὸν ἰχθὺν πιπράσκοντας. The noun is used collectively in P Flor II. 201.9 (A.D. 259) τοὺς παρά σοι ἁλιέας ἀποστεῖλαι ἔχοντας ἰχθὺν κάλλιστον, ";spedire i tuoi pescatori con assai quantità di pesce"; (Ed.). For the adj. ἰχθυϊκός (2 Chronicles 33:14 A) see Ostr 331.4 (Ptol.) ἰχθυϊκῶν ἁλιέων, and for ἰχθυηρός (2 Esdras 13:3) see P Par 63.98 (B.C. 165) τοὺς ὑποτελεῖς τῆ ̣ τε ἰχθυηρᾷ καὶ ζυτηρᾷ, ";those subject to the fish tax and the beer tax."; The Christian epigram Kaibel 725 (iii-v/A.D.) is partly acrostic, the initial letters of the first five lines making up the word ἰχθύς.
