Vocabulary of the Greek NT

This subst, which in the NT is confined to Romans 1:20, is used in P Lond 233.3 (A.D. 345) (= II. p. 273, Chrest. I. p. 68) with reference to a visit which Abinnaeus had paid to the Imperial court to obtain an appointment as tax-collector παρὰ τῆς θιότητος τῶν δ ̣εσποτῶν ἡμῶν αἰωνίων Αὐγούστων. It is also restored by Dittenberger in OGIS 519.14 (c. A.D. 245) ὅπως περὶ τούτων ἐκειν ()θη σου ἡ θε [ιότης, and in Syll 420.23 we read of the θειότης of Jovius Maximinus Daza (A.D. 305–13). Syll 656.31 (ii/A.D.) declares that Artemis has made Ephesus [πασῶν τῶν πόλεων ] ἐνδοξοτέραν διὰ τῆς ἰδίας θειότητος, where the context is an expansion of the last clause in Acts 19:27. With the Bibl. usage cf. Aristeas 95 with reference to the priests’ ministration in the Temple—φόβῳ καὶ καταξίως μεγάλης θειότητος ἅπαντ᾽ ἐπιτελεῖται, ";everything is performed with reverence and in a manner worthy of the divine majesty.";
