A good parallel to the use of this rare word (for class. ἡμιθνής) in Luke 10:30 is afforded by P Amh II. 141.13 (A.D. 350) where a woman lodges a complaint regarding an assault committed on her by her brother and his wife—πληγαῖς ἱκαναῖς με κατέκτ ̣ι [να ]ν. . . . ἡμιθανῆ καταστήσαντες, ";they nearly killed me by numbers of blows and left me half dead"; (Edd.). Cf. JBL xlv. p. 200.
