P Lond 1177.231 (accounts—A.D. 113) (= III. p. 187) τι [μ ]ῆς ἥλων καὶ ἄλλων, P Strass I. 32.4 (A.D. 261) ἔπεμψα δὲ καὶ ἥλους τέσσαρας εἰς τὴν τούτου πῆξιν, P Oxy IX. 1220.16 (iii/A.D.) πέμψις μοι τοὺς ἐκχυσιαίους ἥλους καὶ γλυοῦ (l. γλοιοῦ) κεράμιον, ";you will send me the nails for emptying (?) and a jar of gum"; (Ed.), and the citation from Archiv v. p. 179 s.v. δαπανάω sub fine. The mention of the nails in the hands of the crucified Lord, as in John 20:25, is found in Ev. Petr. 6 καὶ τότε ἀπέσπασαν τοὺς ἥλους ἀπὸ τῶν χειρῶν τοῦ κυρίου.
For a subst. ἡλοκόπος = ";nail-smith"; cf. BGU IV. 1028.19 (ii/A.D.) τοῖς σὺν αὐτῷ ἡλοκόπ (οις), and for the corresponding adj. ib. 1124.11 (B.C. 18) τὴν ἡλοκοπικὴν τέχνην.
