Vocabulary of the Greek NT

See Rutherford NP p. 307 for the history of this word (MGr ἀλόχτερας ) in classical Greek. It is found in P Tebt I. 140 (B.C. 72) τι [μὴ ]ν ἀλέκτορος καὶ ἀρτοπίνακος . Add P Ryl II. 166.19 (A.D. 26) . ἕνα (which, as in 16718, is promised as a yearly offering, in the proposal to take up a lease), P Fay 11929 (c. A.D. 100) ἀλέκτορας δέκα , BGU I. 2694 (ii/iii A.D.) and IV. 106711 f. (A.D. 101–2) ἀλεκτόρων . From a later time (iii/iv A.D., according to Leemans) comes P Leid V ix. 31, .32, x. 1, where we have (τὸν ) ἀλέκτορα bis, and then ἀλεκτόρου : so Wünsch AF 3.16 (imperial) ὁ ἀλέκτωρ . It was clearly the normal Κοινή form; but ἀλεκτρυόνων may still be seen in P Oxy IX. 12078 (A.D. 175–6 ?) . τελείων τεσσάρων , in the same phrase as BGU IV. 1067 l.c. It is noteworthy that ἀλεκτρύων occurs in the well-known Gospel fragment (Mitteilungen of the Rainer Papyri I. i. 54) ὁ ἀλεκτρύων δὶς κοκ [κύξει ], Cf. Michel 692.5 (i/A.D.) ἀλεκτρύονα , but in l. 27 of the same inscription ἀλέκτορας .
