1. elegant in figure, mien and bearing, graceful, opp. ἀσχήμων, Pl. R. 413e, al.; ἀλεκτρυών Cratin. 108; τὰ εὐ. ἡμῶν (sc. μόρια) 1 Corinthians 12:24 : Comp. - έστερος more respectable, Pl. R. 554e: Sup. - έστατοι, πονεῖν ἵπποι X. Eq. 11.12.
2. in bad sense, with an outside show of goodness, specious in behaviour, εἴς τινα E. Med. 584.

εὐσχήμων, εὔσχημον (εὖ, and σχῆμα the figure, Latinhabitus);
1. of elegant figure, shapely, graceful, comely, bearing oneself becomingly in speech or behavior (Euripides, Aristophanes, Xenophon, Plato): τά εὐσχήμονα ἡμῶν, the comely parts of the body that need no covering (opposed to τά ἀσχήμονα ἡμῶν, verse 23), 1 Corinthians 12:24; of morals: πρός τό εὔσχημον, to promote decorum, 1 Corinthians 7:35.
2. in later usage (cf. Lob. ad Phryn., p. 333), of good standing, honorable, influential, wealthy, respectable (R. V. of honorable estate): Mark 15:43; Acts 13:50; Acts 17:12. (Josephus, de vita sua §9; Plutarch, parallel. Graec. et Rom c. 15, p. 309 b.)

1. elegant, graceful, comely (Eur., Plat., al.): τὰ εὐ . ἡμῶν (opp. to τὰ ἀσχ - ἡμ -), 1 Corinthians 12:24; in moral sense, seemly, becoming, 1 Corinthians 7:35.
2. Also in late Gk. (v. Swete, Mk., l.c.; MM, Exp., xiv), wealthy, influential (RV, of honourable estate): Mark 15:43, Acts 13:50; Acts 17:12.†

With 1 Corinthians 7:35 πρὸς τὸ εὔσχημον, ";for that which is seemly,"; ";to promote decorum,"; cf. the office of the εὐσχήμων or guardian of public morals in Egypt, e.g. BGU III. 926.5 (A.D. 188) ἵνα παραγενομένων τ [ῶν ] κρατίστων εὐσχημόν [ων ] μη [δε ]μία μέμψις γένη [ται, ib. I. 147.1 (ii/iii A.D.) ἀρχεφόδοις καὶ εὐσχήμοσι κώμης, P Ryl II. 236.15 (A.D. 256) εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν τοῦ εὐσχήμονος, ";to the house of the magistrate,"; and Ostr 1153 (Rom.) πέμψατε τοὺς εὐ [σ ]χήμονας τοὺς ἐπὶ τ ̣ῶν παρολκημ (άτων). The adj. is used in the weaker sense of ";fitting,"; ";suitable,"; in Michel 1510.5 (B.C. 167–146) with reference to erecting a statue—ὅπου ἂν δόξηι εὔσχημον εἶναι. For the meaning ";of honourable position"; (in society), as in Mark 15:43, which is condemned by Phrynichus (ed. Lobeck, p. 333), and described by Rutherford (NP p. 417) as apparently ";confined to Christian writers,"; we can now add to the exx. cited by Wetstein from Plutarch and Josephus such passages as P Hamb I. 37.7 (ii/A.D.) σὺ γὰρ ἀληθινὸς φιλόσοφος καὶ εὐσχήμων γεγένη ̣[σαι, and P Flor I. 16.20 (A.D. 239) ἐντεῦθεν δὲ παρέλαβον παρὰ τῆς εὐσχήμονος, ";from the noble lady";—an intere sting parallel to Acts 13:50; Acts 17:12; Acts 17:34 D (see Ramsay CRE, p. 161). In a trial before the prefect, P Flor I. 61.61 (A.D. 85), the sentence is pronounced—ἄξιος μ [ὲ ]ν ἦς μαστιγωθῆναι, διὰ σεαυτοῦ [κ ]ατασχὼν ἄνθρωπον εὐσχήμονα καὶ γυν [αῖ ]καν. See also Syll 717.13 (ii/B.C.) τὴν παρεπιδημίαν ἐποιήσατο εὐσχήμονα καὶ ἀξίαν τειμῆς, Kaibel 352.2 (a physician’s epitaph) σπουδαῖον, εὐ [προσήγορον ] καὶ εὐσχή [μονα, and the passages in Vettius Valens, where the word is defined in the Index as = ";illustris.";
