εὐδία, ἐυδιας, ἡ (from εὔδιος, ἐυδιον, and this from εὖ and Ζεύς, genitive Διός, Zeus, the ruler of the air and sky), a serene sky, fair weather: Matthew 16:2 (T brackets WH reject the passage). (Sir. 3:15; Pindar, Aeschylus, Hippocrates, Xenophon, and following.)

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

This originally poetical word (Thumb Dial. p. 373), which is rejected in the best texts of Matthew 16:2, occurs on the Rosetta stone OGIS 90.11 (B.C. 196) καὶ δαπάνας πολλὰς ὑπομεμένηκεν ἕνεκα τοῦ τὴν Αἴγυπτον εἰς εὐδίαν ἀγαγεῖν, where Dittenberger notes that it is used metaphorically ";de beato et tranquillo rerum publicamm statu"; : cf. Herodas i. 28, where amongst the glories of Egypt are mentioned—δύναμις, εὐδ [ίη, δ ]όξα, ";power, peace, fame."; For the literal sense cf. P Oxy IX. 1223.12 (late iv/A.D.) ἠ (l. εἰ) καὶ εὐδία ἐστὶ καὶ τὸ πλοῖον ἀνενέγκε οὐ δύναται ἐν τῇ σήμερον, ";if it is calm weather and he cannot bring back the boat to-day"; (Ed.).
