ἑορτάζω,
I in Ion. Prose ὁρτάζω· impf. ἑώρταζον (with irreg. augm.) Isoc. 19.40, Paus. 4.19.4: fut. -άσω Luc. Merc.Cond. 16, Alciphr. 3.18, etc.: aor. ἑώρτασα D.C. 48.34, etc.; inf. ἑορτάσαι Ar. Ach. 1079, Pl. R. 458a; cf. διεορτάζω: (ἑορτή): — keep festival or holiday, Hdt. 2.60, 122, E. IT 1458, etc.; ἑορτὰς ἑ. celebrate festivals, X. Ath. 3.2; ἡμέρας τέτταρας Plu. Cam. 42; τὴν γενέθλιόν τινος OGI 493.26 (Ephesus, ii A.D.); ἑ. τῷ θεῷ Luc. Anach. 23.
II celebrate as a festival, νίκην ἑ. celebrate it by a festival, Plu. 2.349f, cf. Ant. 56; at Rome, celebrate by a triumph, D.C. 51.21.

For this verb which in the NT is confined to 1 Corinthians 5:8, but is frequent in the LXX, cf. BGU II. 646.6 (A.D. 193), an order issued by a prefect during the short reign of the Emperor Pertinax—ἵνα πάντες ῒδιῆτα [ι ] (l. εἰδῆτε) καὶ ταῖς ι ̔σαις ἡμέραις ἑορτάσητ [α ]ι (l. ἑορτάσητε). See also OGIS 493.25 (ii/A.D.) κ [αθ᾽ ἕκαστον ἐνιαυτὸν ] ἑορτάζειν τὴν γενέθλιον αὐ [τοῦ καὶ πᾶσιν ] ἀνθρώποις αἰτίαν ἀγαθῶν ἡμέ [ραν, with reference to a birthday celebration.
