ἐνεός
(in codd. sts. ἐννεός Acts 9:7, etc.), ά, όν,
1. dumb, speechless, freq. joined with κωφός, as Pl. Tht. 206d, Arist. HA 536b4, Pr. 961b14, Sens. 437a16; without κωφός, ἐνεοῖς ἀνθρώποις ὁμοίονς Epicur. Fr. 356, cf. LXX Isaiah 56:10, Plu. Numbers 8:1-26, D.C. 62.16: acc. to Hsch., ὃς οὔτε ἀκούει οὔτε λαλεῖ deaf and dumb, as in X. An. 4.5.33. Adv. -εῶς dub.l. in Orac. ap. Polyaen. 6.53.
2. senseless, stupid, ἀπείρους καὶ ἐ. Pl. Alc. 2.140d.
3. of things, useless, Hp. Off. 8; ἐς τὸ ἐ. κεῖσθαι ibid.
4. dumbfounded, astonished, εἱστήκεισαν ἐ. Act. l.c.
ἐνεός, see ἐννεός.
STRONGS NT 1769: ἐννεός ἐννεός, more correctly ἐνεός (L T Tr WH (cf. the preceding word)), ἐννεου, ὁ (it seems to be identical with ἀνεως equivalent to unused ἀναυος, ἀναος, from ἄω, αὔω to cry out, hence, without sound, mute), dumb, mute, destitute of the power of speech (Plato, Aristotle): Isaiah 56:10, cf. Proverbs 17:28; ἐνεόν μή δυνάμενον λαλῆσαι, of an idol, Baruch 6:40 (Epistle Jer.); unable to speak for terror, struck dumb, astounded: so εἱστήκεισαν ἐνεοί, stood speechless (Vulg. stabant stupefacti), Acts 9:7; Hesychius ἐμβροντηθεντες. ἐνεοί γενόμενοι. Cf. Alberti, Glossary in N. T., p. 69. In the same sense ἀπηνεώθη, Daniel 4:16 Theod., from ἀπενεόω.
