Thayer's Expanded Definition

ἐλαιῶν, Ἐλαιῶνος, (the ending ὤν in derivative nouns indicating a place set with trees of the kind designated by the primitive, as δαφνων, ἰτεων, δρυμῶν κέδρων, cf. Alexander Buttmann (1873) Ausf. Spr. ii., p. 422ff: Kühner, i., p. 711; (Jelf, § 335 d.)); an olive-orchard, a place planted with olive trees, i. e. the Mount of Olives (A. V. Olivet) (see ἐλαία, 1): Acts 1:12 (διά τοῦ Ἐλαιῶνος ὄρους, Josephus, Antiquities 7, 9, 2). In Luke 19:29; Luke 21:37 also we should write τό ὄρος τό καλούμενον ἐλαιῶν (so L T Tr (but WH with R G ἐλααιων)); likewise in Josephus, Antiquities 20, 8, 6 πρός ὄρος τό προσαγορευόμενον ἐλαιῶν; b. j. 2, 13, 5 and 5, 2, 3 εἰς (κατά) ἐλαιῶν καλούμενον ὄρος; 6, 2, 8 κατά τό ἐλαιῶν ὄρος; (but in Josephus the passages cited; Bekker editions, ἐλαιῶν). Cf. Fritzsche on Mark, p. 794f; Buttmann, 22 (19f); Winers Grammar, 182 (171) n. 1; (but see WHs Appendix, p. 158b). (The Sept. sometimes render זַיִת freely by ἐλαιῶν, as Exodus 23:11; Deuteronomy 6:11; 1 Samuel 8:14, etc.; not found in Greek writings.)

Abbott-Smith Manual Greek Lexicon of the New Testament

ἐλαιών , -ῶνος ,

(< ἐλαία ),

[in LXX for H2132;]

olive-grove, olive-garden (so in FlJ and in Papyri; Deiss., BS, 209 ff.; MM, Exp., iii; M, Pr., 49, 69, 235): Luke 19:29; Luke 21:37 (WH, -ῶν ; v. their App., 158; Field, Notes, 73; El., § 10, 5; 33, 1; Thayer, s.v.), Acts 1:12 (where EL, ll c., proposes the conjectural emendation ἐλαιῶν for -ῶνος ).†

Vocabulary of the Greek NT

Deissmann (BS p. 208 ff.) has sufficiently demonstrated against Blass (Gr. pp. 32, 64, 85) the reality of this word : see also Proleg. pp. 49, 69, 235, and add from the recently published P Ryl II. 130.9 (A.D. 31) εἰς τὸν ὑπάρχοντά μοι. . .. ἐλαιῶνα, 138.9 (A.D. 34) εἰς τὰ νεώφυτα τῶν ἐλαιώνων, ";into the young plantations in the olive-yards"; (Edd.), 152.11 (A.D. 42) ἐν ἐλαιῶ (νι) Θερμουθαρίου, also P Lond 214.10 (A.D. 270–5) (= II. p. 161, Chrest. I. p. 209) εἰς ἀμπελικὸν χωρίον καλούμενον Ἐλαιῶνα. The formation is a favourite one, as φοινικών, ";palmgrove"; (P Amh II. 31.3 al.–B.C. 112, P Gen I. 38.5–A.D. 207–8), καμηλών, ";camel-shed"; (P Oxy III. 507.26–A.D. 169, 533.22–ii/iii A.D.). The specializing of the —ών suffix (";place of. . .";, as in ἀνδρών, γυναικών, κοιτών, etc.) for groves is found in δαφνών, ἀμπελών, φηγών, πιτυών, μηλών, κυπαρισσών, συκών, Ἑλικών (";willow mountain";)—the last a specially good parallel for Ἐλαιών, if the etymology is sound. Cf. Brugmann Kurze Vergl. Gramm. § 414, and Moulton Gr. ii. § 61 (b).
