εἰδωλεῖον, or εἰδώλιον as the word is read in the best MSS., occurs several times in the LXX, but in the NT only in 1 Corinthians 8:10. No instance has been found as yet in profane Greek, but we may compare such analogous forms as Ἰσιεῖον and Ἀνουβιεῖον, shrines dedicated to Isis and Anubis : see e.g. P Tebt I. 5.70 f. (B.C. 118). The invitation in P Oxy I. 110 (ii/A.D.) δειπνῆσαι εἰς κλείνην τοῦ κυρίου Σαράπιδος ἐν τῷ Σαραπείῳ, ";to sup at the table (couch) of the lord Serapis in the Serapeum"; is also an excellent illustration of 1 Corinthians 8:10; 1 Corinthians 10:21; 1 Corinthians 10:27 : cf. P Oxy III. 523 (ii/A.D.) (= Selections, p. 97) and Wilcken Archiv iv. p. 211.
