Vocabulary of the Greek NT

For the technical use of this word (= cognitio) in Wisdom of Solomon 3:18, Acts 25:21, see P Hib I. 93.10 (c. B.C. 250) ἡ δια ̣γ ̣[νωσις περὶ αὐτοῦ ἔσ ]τω πρὸς βασ [ιλικά, ";decision about his case shall be made with reference to the royal decrees"; (Edd.). This early instance disposes of Deissmann’s statement (LAE, p. 346 n.2.) that the word is not found in this sense until the end of ii/A.D., IG XIV. 1072 ἐπὶ. . . διαγνώσεων τοῦ Σεβαστοῦ, ";a . . . cognitionibus Augusti."; P Lond 358.17 (c. A.D. 150) (= II. p. 172) τῆς τοῦ λαμπροτάτου ἡ [γε ]μόνος Μουνατίου Φήλικος διαγνώσεως is a little earlier. To the same period belongs PSI I. 103.16 αἱ δηλωθ [εῖσαι ] ἐπ [ισ ]χέσθ (αι) ἄχρι τῆς τοῦ κ [ρατίστου ] [γ ]ε ̣μόνος διαγνώσεως, which resembles Ac l.c. especially.
