δαπανάω, δαπάνω: future δαπανήσω; 1 aorist ἐδαπάνησα; (δαπάνη); from (Herodotus and) Thucydides down; to incur expense, expend, spend: τί, Mark 5:26 (1 Macc. 14:32); ἐπί with the dative of person, for one, in his favor, Acts 21:24; ὑπέρ τίνος, 2 Corinthians 12:15. in a bad sense, to waste, squander, consume: πάντα, Luke 15:14; ἵνα ἐν ταῖς ἡδοναῖς ὑμῶν δαπανήσητε, that ye may consume, waste what ye receive, in luxurious indulgence — (ἐν marking the realm in rather than the object on): James 4:3. A.D. 1) ἐδαπανή (θησαν ) εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν ἁλὸς (ἀρτάβαι ) β ̄, P Fay 125.9 (ii/A.D.) τὸ δαπανηθ ̣[ὲν ] παραδέξομαι , ";I will make an allowance for the expense"; (Edd.), P Flor III. 334.9 (ii/A.D.) καὶ πάλι τῆι σῆι σφραγῖδι ἀσφαλῶς κλείσας σφράγισον τὸ δαπανηθὲν ἀνάλωμα εἰς τοὺς θησαυρούς , εἰς ᾗ (for ἣν ?) ὅσιόν ἐστιν . In OGIS 59.15 (c. B.C. 188) Ptolemy V announces a yearly grant of 111 Ptolemaic drachmae to the garrison on the island of Thera—ὅπως ἔχωσιν εἴς τε τὰς θυσίας καὶ τὸ ἄλειμμα δαπανᾶν . With ἐν , as in James 4:3, BGU I. 149.5 (ii/iii A.D.) καὶ ἐν πυρῷ κατ᾽ ἔτος δαπανᾶται τὰ ὑπογεγρ (αμμένα ). Other things than money may be the subject : thus an undated ostracon in Archiv v. p. 179, no. 34 τοὺς ἥλους , οὓς ἠγόρασας , ἐπιμελῶς τήρησον , ὅπως Τύραννος ὁ κυβερνήτης μαρτυρήσῃ μοι , ὅτι διὰ αὐτοῦ ὁμοῦ ἐδαπανήθησαν .
