Or. 33.13, 50.12); τίνα ἔχουσα γνώμην; with what purpose? Hdt. 3.119; οἶδα δ' οὐ γνώμῃ τίνι; with what intent? S. OT 527, cf. γνώμη, γνώμης, (from γινώσκω);

1. the faculty of knowing, mind, reason.

2. that which is thought or known, one's mind;

a. view, judgment, opinion: 1 Corinthians 1:10; Revelation 17:13.

b. mind concerning what ought to be done, aa. by oneself, resolve, purpose, intention: ἐγένετο γνώμη (T Tr WH γνώμης, see γίνομαι 5 e. a.) τοῦ ὑποστρέφειν, Acts 20:3 (Buttmann, 268 (230)). bb. by others, judgment, advice: διδόναι γνώμην, 1 Corinthians 7:25 (40); 2 Corinthians 8:10. cc. decree: Revelation 17:17; χωρίς τῆς σής γνώμης, without thy consent, Philemon 1:14. (In the same senses in Greek writings; (cf. Schmidt, chapter 13, 9; Meyer on 1 Corinthians 1:10).)

1. a means of knowing, a token (Theogn.).

2. In Attic writers, the mind, its operations and results (v. Edwards, Lex., App., A);

(a) mind, understanding;

(b) purpose, intention: Acts 20:3;

(c) judgment, opinion: 1 Corinthians 1:10 Revelation 17:13;

(d) counsel, advice: 1 Corinthians 7:25; 1 Corinthians 7:40, 2 Corinthians 8:10, Philemon 1:14;

(e) royal purpose, decree (as in Da, 1 Esdras and Ezra): Revelation 17:17 (Cremer, 671).†

P Lond 17.47 (B.C. 162) (= I. p. 11) μετὰ τῆς τῶν εἰθισμένων γνώμης . P Oxy X. 1280.5 (iv/A.D.) ἑκουσίᾳ καὶ αὐθαιρέτῳ γνώμῃ , ";of my own free will."; The phrase κατὰ γνώμην is common in opening greetings, e. g. P Petr II. 11 (1).1 (iii/B.C.) (= Selections, p. 7) καλῶς ποιεῖς εἰ ἔρρωσαι καὶ τὰ λοιπά σοι κατὰ γνώμην ἐστίν , ";I am glad if you are in good health, and everything else is to your mind"; : cf. ib. III. 53(o).5, (q).3. The phrase occurs in Wisdom of Solomon 7:15εἰπεῖν κατὰ γνώμην . With Philemon 1:14 χωρὶς δὲ τῆς σῆς γνώμης , ";without your consent,"; cf. P Grenf II. 14(a).20 (iii/B.C.) ἄνευ τῆς σῆς γνώμης , and for similar phrases see P Tebt I. 6.37 (B.C. 140–39), ib. 104.28 (B.C. 92), P Par 62iii. 3 (ii/B.C.), BGU IV. 1051.30 (a marriage contract—time of Augustus), and μετὰ γνώμης in P Oxy IV. 729.43 (A.D. 137). It = ";consent"; in P Flor I. 58.8 (iii/A.D.), where a complainant declares he has been ousted from a holding δίχα παντὸς νόμου καὶ δί [χα . . .. . .. ] ἐξουσίας καὶ δίχα γνώμης ἐμῆς καὶ συνκαταθέσ ̣ε [ω ]̓. BGU IV. 1137.12 (B.C. 6) ἔδοξε κοινῇ γνώμῃ = ";carried unanimously."; P Gen I. 54.4 (iv/A.D.) οἷδας τὴν γνώμην μου ὅτι γν [ ]μη ὁποία ἐστίν : for ὅτι ὁπ ́οία Nicole compares BGU II. 601.10 (ii/A.D.) γράψον μοι . . . ὅτι τί ἔπραξας .
