The burning of perfume or incense is always expressed by the word Kathar (קטר ), to burn or turn into vapour, the incense being called Kethorethin the Hiphil, the verb is used of the burning of animal sacrifices (see p. 194, note) in the Piel voice it is rendered offer; in connection with incense, in Numbers 16:40; 1 Chronicles 6:49; Jeremiah 11:12; Jeremiah 11:17; Jeremiah 32:29; and Amos 4:5. The word θυμιάω is generally adopted for it in the LXX. See Revelation 5:8; Revelation 8:3-4; Revelation 18:13, for the use of this word in the N.T. We must distinguish incense from frankincense (levonah), Which was one of its components. The R. V. has corrected the six places where they are conf used by the A. V., namely, Isaiah 43:23; Isaiah 60:6; Isaiah 66:3; Jeremiah 6:20; Jeremiah 17:26; Jeremiah 41:5.
