German physician; born at Bleicherode, near Erfurt, Oct. 15, 1800; died at Nordhausen March 7, 1850; nephew of Naphtali Hirz Wessely. He was educated at the universities of Halle and Göttingen (M.D. 1823); from 1823 to 1828 he studied at Paris; and in the latter year, returning to Germany, settled in Nordhausen, where he practised medicine until his death. Wessely received the title of "Geheimer Hofrath" from the Duke of Nassau, and that of "Sanitätsrath" from the King of Prussia. In 1849 he founded, together with L. Blödan, the "Neue Zeitung für Medizin" and the "Medicinal Reform," both of which journals he edited until his death.
