Palestinian amora of the second half of the third century of the common era. None of his halakic or haggadic maxims has been preserved; and he is known only through his quotations of the Statements of others. He is twice mentioned in the Babylonian Talmud: in Ḥul. 56b, where he transmits an apothegm of R. Mani, and in B. M. 72b, where he cites an opinion by R. Eleazar. He is apparently identical with Samuel b. Ḥiyya b. Judah, who is frequently mentioned in the Palestinian Talmud as quoting the maxims of R. Ḥanina b. Ḥama. Furthermore, in Gen. R. 48:6 Samuel b. Ḥiyya is named as the authority for the same statement of R. Ḥanina b. Ḥama as is quoted in the name of Samuel b. Ḥiyya b. Judah in Pesiḳ. R. 15 (ed. Friedmann, p. 72a).
