German rabbi; born at Prossnitz, Moravia, Dec. 21, 1848. He was educated in his native town, at the gymnasium at Olmütz, and at the University (Ph.D. 1869) and the Jewish Theological Seminary (rabbi 1869) of Breslau. He became successively rabbi at Nakel (1875), Mannheim (1879), Pilsen (1880), Carlsbad (1882), and Leipsic; he has officiated in the last-mentioned city since 1888.

Porges has written many articles, essays, and critiques for the periodicals, especially for the "Revue des Etudes Juives," the "Monatsschrift für Gesch. und Wissenschaft des Judenthums," "Zeitschrift für Hebräische Bibliographie," and the "Centralblatt für Bibliothekswesen," and is the author of "Ueber die Verbalstammbildung in den Semitischen Sprachen," Vienna, 1875; "Bibelkunde und Babelfunde," Leipsic, 1903.
