German lawyer; born Oct. 15, 1809, at Rhena, Mecklenburg; died Oct. 7, 1881, at Manchester, England. On account of his indefatigable exertions in behalf of his coreligionists he became known as the "Gabriel Riesser of Mecklenburg." He was the first Jewish deputy of the Mecklenburg Diet, of which he became vice-president. He was made honorary citizen of the city of Schwerin, and for seventeen years was acting president of its municipal council (Kayserling, "Gedenkblätter," Leipsic, 1892), and president of the Jewish community of Schwerin.
