Italian diplomat; born at Turin Dec. 14, 1841. In 1862 he entered the diplomatic service, and by 1887 had become envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary; two years later he was appointed councilor of state, and shortly afterward became general secretary in the ministry of foreign affairs. In 1875-76 he formed one of a committee appointed to draft certain commercial treaties; in 1879 he attended the monetary conference held at Paris, as the delegate of the Italian government. In 1891-92 he arranged a number of commercial treaties with Austro-Hungary, Germany, and Switzerland. He was repeatedly nominated vice-president and member of council of the Italian Geographical Society; he still (1904) occupies the latter position.
