Jossa, Grigori Andreiyevich

Russian mining engineer; born about 1800; died in St. Petersburg 1874. Jossa graduated from the St. Petersburg school of mines in 1823, and, after a short term of service at the Ural iron-works, was sent by the Russian government to complete his studies at the mining-school in Freiberg, Germany. On his return to St. Petersburg he was appointed professor of metallurgy and mining engineering in his alma mater, which position he held for twenty-five years.
The most noted of Jossa's writings are: "O Dobyvanii Syery," St. Petersburg, 1856, and "Kamenny Ugol, Ogneupornaya Glina i Syerny Kolchedan Novgorodskoi Gub," ib. 1855. Jossa was a convert to Christianity.
