Jose B. Jacob B. Idi
The 1901 Jewish Encyclopedia
Palestinian amora of the fourth generation (4th cent.). He was the colleague of R. Judan of Magdala (Yer. Ta'an. 1:3), and one of the expounders of the haggadot of R. Aha the Lydian. He has also some original sayings, in one of which he makes the statement—based on 1 Kings 12:27, and with reference to Deuteronomy 31:11—that Jeroboam was elected king in the Sabbatical year, when the head of the nation was required to read publicly in the Temple at Jerusalem the prescribed portion of the Law; and that, in order to avoid celebrating the festival in the Holy City, where he would have had the mortification of seeing the King of Judea read the Law, he (Jeroboam) set up another place of worship with the golden calves (Yer. 'Ab. Zarah 39b). Only one halakah of Jose's has been preserved (Yer. Yeb. 10d).
