German opera-singer; born at Brunswick June 8, 1847. Educated at the Conservatorium of Leipsic (1865-69), he made his début at the court theater at Munich, and played, between 1869 and 1883, successively in Mayence, Bremen, Neu-Strelitz, Strasburg, Augsburg, and Königsberg, at the last-named place directing the city theater for three years. In 1883 he became manager of the opera at Leipsic, where he is at present (1903) engaged. The Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha conferred upon him the title of "court singer." His repertoire includes: Barbier, Don Juan, Hans Heiling, Telramund, Wotan, Papagino, etc.
