German author; born at Hoya, Hanover, June 21, 1861. He was educated at Dorotheenstadt industrial school, Friedrich Werder gymnasium, and Munich University, taking his Ph.D. degree in 1888. He is the author of "Christian Wernicke," 1888, and has edited the following works: "Briefe der Elisabeth Charlotte," 1889; "Johann Gottlieb Regis' 'Fragmente einer Shakespeareübersetzung,'" 1893; and, with G. Brandes and P. Schlenther, the collected works of Ibsen.
Since 1891 Elias has been editor-in-chief of the "Jahresberichte für Neuere Deutsche Litteraturgeschichte."
