Philanthropist; born 1798 in Amsterdam; died in Paris July 15, 1856. He went to Paris as a young man, and entered upon a successful business career, devoting a great, deal of his time and energy to the affairs of the community. He was president of the Board of Jewish Charities of Paris, honorary president of the Rothschild Hospital in the Rue Picpus, and he addressed himself in behalf of the community, often with success, directly to King Louis Philippe and to the Duke of Orleans. Cohen was also a member of the Jewish consistory, and the founder, as well as the most active worker, of the Société des Amis du Travail, which had for its object the assistance of children toward an honest career as mechanics or artisans.
