Founder of the first Jewish women's lodge in America; born in Bohemia April, 1810; died in New York city April, 1888. She married Dr. Philip Bruckman, and, about the year 1842, came with him to the United States, settling in New York city. Dr. Bruckman and his wife did much to assist their fellow-countrymen who emigrated to New York, the former winning the sobriquet of "Der Böhmische Vater."
Mrs. Bruckman conceived the idea of organizing a women's lodge and broached the subject to several ladies of the Congregation Emanu-El. An informal meeting was held at her house in 1846, resulting in the foundation, on April 21 of that year, of the "Unabhängiger Orden Treuer Schwestern" (Independent Order of True Sisters), a secret benevolent society.
