WILLIAM SIDNEY MOUNT (1807-1868), American artist, was born at Setauket, Long Island, New York, on the 26th of November 1807. He studied in the schools of the National Academy of Design, New York, and in 1832 was made a full Academician. Among his better-known works are "Turning the Grindstone" and "Farmer's Nooning," Jonathan Sturgis collection; "Turn of the Leaf," Lenox Library, New York; "Bargaining for a Horse," New York Historical Society; "Raffling for a Goose," M. O. Robert's collection; "Long Story," Corcoran Art Gallery, Washington; and "War News," Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. He died at Setauket, Long Island, on the 19th of November 1868. His brother, Shepard Alonzo Mount (1804-1868), also an artist, best known as a portrait painter, became a National Academician in 1842.
