a town of British India, in the Salem district of Madras, 24 m. E. of Bangalore. Pop. (1901) 6695. It contains an old fort, frequently mentioned in the history of the Mysore wars, and a fine castellated mansion built by a former collector.

Close by is the remount depot, established in 1828, where Australian horses are acclimatized and trained for artillery and cavalry use in southern India.
