Comprises the counties of Berwick, the southern part of Fife (on right bank of the Eden), Linlithgow, Midlothian, Peebles, Roxburgh, Selkirk, Stirling (except Baldernock), and West Lothian. Initially founded before 900 and designated as an archiepiscopal see in 1472. Re-established on October 13, 1653 as the Prefecture Apostolic of Scotland. Elevated to the Vicariate Apostolic of Scotland on March 16, 1694. Name changed to the Vicariate Apostolic of Lowland District on July 23, 1727, and then to the Vicariate Apostolic of Eastern District on February 13, 1827. Elevated to the Archdiocese of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh on March 4, 1878. Suffragen dioceses include
- Aberdeen, Scotland
- Argyll and the Isles, Scotland
- Dunkeld, Scotland
- Galloway, Scotland
Notable bishops include
- William Lamberton, during whose episcopacy the cathedral was consecrated (1318)
- Henry Wardlaw, founder of the University of Saint Andrews (1411)
