Reigned from July 5, to December 13, 1294. Born in Isernia, Italy, in 1215 as Pietro de Murbone; died near Anagni, Italy, in May 19, 1296. He was a Benedictine, lived a life of solitude, and founded the Benedictine Celestines. Two years after the death of Pope Nicholas IV he was elected pope by the Council of Perugia. An unwilling and incapable occupant of the papal chair, he committed many mistakes, and resigned after a pontificate of five months. His successor, Boniface VIII, kept him closely guarded in case a faction should seek to restore him. Canonized in 1313. Feast, May 19,.
