Comprises the civildistrict of South Kanara. The Franciscans who arrived in the 16th century were the pioneer missionaries of the region. The Oratorian, Blessed Joseph Vas labored there (1685-1712). Erected as a diocese on September 1, 1886 as a suffragan of Bombay. Suffragen of the archdiocese of Bangalore.
