Prefecture Apostolic of Kaiser-Wilhelms-Land, Melanesia, Pacific Ocean, erected February 24, 1896. The eastern part of the mandated territory of New Guinea mainland and adjacent islands split to form the Prefecture Apostolic of Eastern Kaiser-Wilhelms-Land on July 25, 1913; entrusted to the Missionaries of the Society of the Divine Word. Elevated to the Vicariate Apostolic of Eastern New Guinea of November 23, 1922. Name changed to the Vicariate Apostolic of Alexishafen on May 15, 1952. Elevated to the Archdiocese of Madang on November 15, 1966. See also:
