German chemist and mineralogist. Born May 15, 1774 at Mattenzell, Bavaria; died March 5, 1856 at Munich, Bavaria. Professor of chemistry and mineralogy at the University of Landshut in 1807. Conservator of the mineralogical collections at Munich in 1823. Professor of mineralogy in Munich in 1826. Renowned for his analyses of minerals. Discovered a process of producing soluble glass which is employed in stereochromy, a type of fresco painting. A certain kind of muscovite is known as "fuchsite" in his honor. Retired in 1852. Knighted by the king of Bavaria in 1854.
