Jocelin, Bishop
1910 New Catholic Dictionary
Profile Cistercian monk at Melrose abbey during the abbacy of Saint Waltheof of Melrose. Prior of Melrose. Fourth abbot of Melrose in 1170. Bishop of Glasgow, Scotland on May 23, 1174. Worked to keep the Church in Scotland independent of the control of the archdioceses in England, and was supported in this by the Vatican. Travelled extensively and served as chaplain in the royal court of Scotland. Author and supporter of writers in his day; he commissioned the works Life of Saint Waltheof, Life of Saint Kentigern, and Chronical of Melrose.
Born c.1135in the Scottish border area
Died March 17, 1199 at Melrose Abbey of natural causes; interred in the choir of the abbey church
