Name of Our Lord (Matthew 1:25). It is the Latin form of the Greek, Iesous; Hebrew, Jeshua; Joshua, meaning "Jehovah is salvation," and interpreted by the Fathers as Saviour. The name is celebrated by the Feast of the Holy Name, and venerated especially by the Holy Name Society as a means of correcting the habit of profanity, and cultivating a spirit of reverence. The name by which to invoke God the Father: "If you ask the Father any thing in my name, He will give it to you" (John 16:23). The name by which Peter bade the blind man rise and walk (Acts 3:6).
