Author of Ecclesiasticus. Nothing known beyond the information contained in prologue of the book. A native of Jerusalem, noted for his profound knowledge of the Scriptures, he devoted his life to the study of God and His law (true wisdom). He is judged, from his description of the High-Priest Simon, son of Onias II (Sirach 50), to be his contemporary, c.190BC.
