Reigned from 402 to 417. Born Albano, Italy; died in Rome, Italy. Energetic, and zealous for the welfare of the Church, he took several Roman churches from the Novatians. Aided the Emperor Honoriui to oppose the Montanists; settled an Arian schism at Antioch; and condemned the teachings of Pelagius. One of his letters, addressed to Victricius, Bishop of Rouen, contains 14 rules of discipline. Another, to the bishops constituting the Council of Toledo in Spain, attacks Priscillianism. During his pontificate his friend Saint John Chrysostom died in exile, 407. In 410 Rome was sacked by Aleric. Feast, July 28,.
