Hormisdas, Pope Saint
1910 New Catholic Dictionary
Resource Toolbox
Reigned from 514 to 523. Born in Frusino, Italy; died in Rome, Italy. As pope he opened his pontificate by receiving into communion the last adherents of the Laurentian Schism, and then devoted himself to reunion with the Greek Church, while condemning Acacianism and Monophysitism. Emperor Anastasius I refused to admit the condemnation of Acacius and thus frustrated the pope's wish to have the "Formula Hormisdae" signed at the projected synod at Constantinople. When Anastasius died the union was effected, 519, the emperor, patriarch, and all the bishops signing the "Formula." Hormisdas finished a translation of the Apostolic Canons. Feast, Roman Calendar, August 11,.
